Getaway Destination Vacations to Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia is a treasure trove of ancient history, culture and architecture with a rich and fascinating past, as well as a testament to luxury and modernity. The historic hotels in Southeast Asia have just as much allure as the new high-rises. Myanmar is one developing travel destination in particular that packs a luxurious punch littered with sites to see and tourist attractions.
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has seen some significant economic and social changes recently which have resulted in the development of a world-class tourism industry in an attempt to capitalize on US and global economic sanction reforms as well as loosened Travel Visa restrictions. Myanmar is being allowed to trade more and interact with the global market in a way that was not possible in the recent past due to its inclination towards military dictatorships instead of democracy. Now with citizen-run democracy and a much more open and welcoming political landscape, many are flocking to the country not only for its historical value and substance, but for its luxury and modernity as well.
The city of Yangon, Myanmar’s previous capital and most densely populated city in the country, is one specific location that has been especially effected by the recent development of a tourism industry and hotel and accommodation boom. There is so much to do both within the city of Yangon as well as in the surrounding area, and so many beautiful hotels and restaurants to visit.
The brilliant view of the country’s pride and joy, the ancient Shwedagon Pagoda, from the top deck of the lovely Vista Rooftop Bar is priceless. You can get a bottle of beer for around $1.50 US and a steak for just $5 US! But don’t take for granted how beautiful the view of the city can be with Shwedagon at its center, it just might take your breath away.
Alongside all the ancient pagodas and temples are the cornerstones of all modern metropolises€”high-rise skyscrapers and food spots on every corner! However, travel to the northern region of the city and you’ll find the splendid Hlawga National Park where you can actually take an elephant ride through the jungle and see many of Myanmar’s wildlife species in their natural habitat.
As far as accommodations go when you stay in Yangon, you have your pick between such locations as the longest-standing colonial hotel in Myanmar, packed with its own interesting history and stylish comforts; glassy high-rise luxury hotels with pools and spas and 5 star dining; or even a more cost sensitive and engaging experience, such as a stay in a hostel.
If colonial history and new age stylish comforts strike a chord, the beautiful Strand Yangon is definitely a place you need to see. Built in 1901, this is a restored building that originally was designed to house high class colonial diplomats of the British Empire. Over the years, it has accommodated a wide range of high-profile guests, including Mick Jagger and Prince Edward. It is in a convenient location to reach all tourist locations in and around the city, and only minutes from downtown.
If you’re looking to explore what the newer and more modern core of the city has to offer for accommodations, anything from the PARK ROYAL to the Central Hotel Yangon are good picks as they offer the comfort and luxury required to enjoy any relaxing vacation or getaway.
And of course, if you’re planning to get out and experience the city and culture the entire time with no need for fancy or lavish accommodations, you could always use any of the city’s many hostel locations for a quick rest before getting back out on your journey.
