Ecotourism in Europe
In a time when so many are beginning to wonder where all this global warming and climate change will lead us, incorporating some of the world’s ecological wonders into your vacation sounds more and more tempting. Natural beauty can be found all over, from the steamy jungles of South America to the ice covered arctic but why not mix the incredible history with ecotourism on a continent that is rich in both. Europe has a surprising number of pristine natural wonders despite having been inhabited for many thousands of years. One thing that they all have common however is their love for their nature and land so it is easy to explore some of the most beautiful spots on Earth while visiting Europe. Whether you simply decide to hike through an unspoiled wilderness or get your hands dirty while you help with restoration and conservation efforts you’ll walk away with a greater appreciation. So here are some of the best natural wonders to explore during your ecotrip to Europe.
Ireland
Miles and miles of lush, green rolling hills are spread out before you as far as the eye can see. The wind whips all around you as the flowers and grasses blow in the wind and wispy clouds wander across the blue sky. Here is where you truly discover why Ireland is called the Emerald Isle. Ireland is home to unique habitats that are just as precious and soul enriching as any dense jungle. The wilderness is unspoiled and free of development. From mountains to grasslands, to marshes and bogs, Ireland’s wilderness has played an important role in its history and identity.
There are many national parks that are protected areas of conservation but eco friendly tourists can still find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the wildlife and nature. Camping may be prohibited in some areas but there are cabins usually available that adhere to the protection standards.
Estonia
This small country in Eastern Europe is one of the most forested countries in Europe with nearly fifty percent of the land still covered with woods. Here you will find some of the best chances to view the wildlife that has inhabited this land for eons. The government here has taken serious steps to protect and conserve their natural wonders with successful programs to increase the population of brown bears, wolves, lynx, and eagles. With thousands of miles of coastline and off shore islands, the culture here is closely tied to the sea. During certain times of year the land actually floods and then recedes in a natural cycle that has created huge wetlands and marshes all of which create a rich ecosystem.
You can explore the island villages on canoes who celebrate the yearly floods or perhaps join a tour group as you track and watch the magnificent brown bear population. Bird watching, wolves, and plenty of flora can also be discovered making Estonia a perfect place to get out and enjoy a sustainable ecosystem.
Sweden
The Swedish people take their ecotouristm very seriously so if you long to get out of the grimy cities then Sweden is the place for you. There will be no shortage of opportunities as Sweden has the largest ecotourism community in the world dedicated to the conservation of Sweden’s pristine wilderness and sustainable tourism industry. Sweden is not a land of ice but in fact has millions of acres of forests, meadows, and rivers. Here the Swedish people and the government cherish their green spaces and have worked for decades to conserve and protect the environment.
Hop on board a kayak and explore the clear arctic waters off the coast of Sweden or perhaps delve into the culture of the indigenous people who have inhabited the Lapland area for thousands of years. You can even enjoy a reindeer draw sleigh, a unique experience and a great way to give back to the native people who run the tours.
Germany
Following World War II, much of Germany was devastated by the sheer destruction. In the aftermath though the country began to not only rebuild their cities but their natural infrastructure as well with efforts to conserve their natural environment. There are few places on earth as beautiful as the Bavarian Forests of Germany. Deep in the forest the canopy shades the lush forest floor. Ferns, plants and babbling brooks create a forested wonderland that seems to jump straight out of a Tolkien novel that you might assume a hobbit will cross your path any minute. There is no shortage of hiking trails to enjoy and listen to the sounds of the wilderness all around you including a great variety of owls, grouse, otters, and woodpeckers.
The Bavarian Forest has been inhabited for a very long time and is not exactly pristine but much of it protected and under conservation. Small villages dot the forest creating a great place to jump off and explore such a beautiful forest. Cold winters allow a chance to explore the forest by snowshoe or cross country skiing.
