Budapest, the “Paris of Eastern Europe”
Since the Berlin Wall fell Europe has expanded. The ex “iron curtain” countries are open for tourists and they have a lot to offer to the visitors from various perspectives. One of them is Hungary that is geographically located in Central Europe but politically it is one of the ex-Eastern European Block countries. Almost from every aspect it is right on the border between West and East Europe. The capital of Hungary is Budapest and is known as the Paris of Eastern Europe and not without reason.
During its long history Budapest was destroyed innumerable times but till now it has always risen again and become even more beautiful and more colourful. It has been managed to blend architectural and cultural heritage of several centuries with modern life. It is a European city from head to toe. Bustling and modern life are apt ways to describe the city.
Budapest is a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube. The “Duna” divides Budapest into two parts – Buda and Pest. The river runs through the middle and presents a breathtaking view of beautiful old buildings, incredible architecture; lots of history. The View of Budapest, the River Danube embankments, the Castle District, and the whole of Andrássy Avenue were officially recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. However the most well known symbols of Budapest are the Chain Bridge, which is a magnificent sight at night when illuminated and the Parliament building. Other famous scenic spots are the Basilica, the Opera House, the House of Terror, Széchenyi Spa, Heroes’ Square, City Park, Fishermen’s Bastion, Gellért Hill, the Citadella, the other 5 bridges across the Danube and Margaret Island in the middle of the Danube. Beside the above mentioned sights it is also worth seeing the Roman ruins from the Roman, the Market hall and the Funicular railway.
And if visitors have had enough of sightseeing and would like to do something else Budapest and Hungary has a lot to offer. World famous equestrian shows, wine tasting, thermal spas, knights’ tournaments, boat trips, pleasure flights and other programs are available. And if they are looking for something more extreme they can have the opportunity to drive tanks, to tandem jump, try stunt-flying etc…
Also Budapest has great restaurants, bars and a clubs. The weather is hot in the summer; that means a lot of restaurants and night clubs are outdoors! Whatever the reason (cultural, entertainment, fun, party etc) it is definitely worth choosing Budapest as your travel destination.
