Bridlington – A Perfect Spot For Birdwatchers
Birdlington is a seaside resort found in East Riding of Yorkshire. Birdlington coast is found on the Holderness Coast. The Holderness is agricultural as the fertile lands were once marshes before they were drained for agricultural use. The Holderness coast is distinct because it has the fastest erosion of anywhere in Europe. The coast loses about 5 feet each year with much of the debris adding to the Spurn head split to the south. Many towns that were once on the coast have since vanished into the sea.
Birdlington is also on Flamboroug head, which is a chalk coastline, which is a Special Area of Conservation. There are many seabirds on the head and the puffin and gannet breeding grounds can be found in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reserve. The bird population is huge as the head has many migrating birds in the autumn as well as birds taking a rest from their journeys.
Another popular spot for bird watching is Bempton cliffs. The cliffs are known as breeding grounds for the Fulmar, Black-legged Kittiwake, Common Guillemot, Razorbill, Atlantic Puffin and Northern Gannet. The cliffs are made of chalk and have many crevices and sheltered headlands that are perfect for nesting birds. There are several paths that walk along the top of the cliffs with observation points that look into protected areas.
Birdlington is separated into two parts with Birdlington Quay and the Old Town. The old town is about a mile from the coast and the historic market site can still be seen. Birdlington Quay is on the harbor and the part of town that most of the tourists visit. There are many ornamental gardens, sea bathing opportunities and a Quay.
A popular tourist attraction nearby is the town of Sewerby that has a museum and many gardens. Sewerby Hall is a manor house built in the beginning of the 1700s. It sites on 50 acres of gardens and grounds and has a portico, Orangery, clock tower and gatehouse. The house contains the Museum of East Yorkshire and there is a zoo and aviary on the grounds.
