Hokkaido – The Oriental Provence
Now it is the blooming season of lavender. The well-known production places of lavender in the world have been the first tour choice of flower-lovers. Furano in the Hokkaido, Japan is praised as the Oriental Provence.
From late June to early August each year, slopes and plains there are just like purple flower sea. The air is filled with special fragrance, adding bright colors for this northern land. Every year, many tourists from home and abroad came to Hokkaido one after another to enjoy the wonderful flower sea here.
In Provence, France, its purple flower sea in summer is always the classical photo-taken background for postcards, art landscape and romantic films. Compared with leisurely French who can enjoy summer casually, Japanese pay more attention to efficiency and prefer to liveliness and travel. They have stronger sense for seasons. In fact, Japan did not have lavender until it brought in seeds of lavender and began to grow lavender in 1937. Because Furano has the same latitude with Provence, lavender took root here, and then grow and blossom. Since 1970s, wide-ranging reports about lavender in Hokkaido made by some magazines and media began to occur. In the 1980s, a TV drama called Family Affection in the Northland was set in life in Hokkaido, and its pictures of vast lavender fields and magnificent scenery in Furano deeply shocked the audience in front of the television. From then on, tourists who are in the pursuit of purple romance came to Hokkaido in an endless stream. And purple has been the most popular color of Hokkaido in summer.
Through frequent reports of the mass media, Furano has been a well-known tourist resort in Japan. Blue sky, white clouds and green hills further bring out the beautiful purple of lavender fields. In addition to a great stretch of lavender field, there is baby’s breath covering the entire hill, as well as blooming sunflowers and tulips.
