The Mayon Volcano in the Philippines
The Mayon Volcano is the most active volcano in the Philippines and known for its perfect cone. The height is 8000 feet (more than 2400 meters). It is located in the Bicol Region, the province of Legaspi City.
The eruptions begin in 1616 as recorded and erupted more than 40 times already. Since Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, its eruptions caused calamity. In 1814, the most violent eruption caused two nearby towns buried because of the volcanic mudflows. Since then, the scientists at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology constantly monitor Mayon for signs of new activity. The eruption in 1993 was unexpected. It lasted only 30 minutes but it generated flows that killed 68 people and lead 60,000 others to the evacuation center.
Even though, it is dangerous for the villagers to live near the volcano, they still built their houses nearby. At the lower portion of the volcano, you will see a rice field and a coconut plantations with different tomato plants and other vegetables as well. Most of the people living near are farmers and their families. The volcanic soil is fertile. Since farming is their way of living, they tend not to leave the place because farmers get free fertilizers for their plants to grow fast. Remember, the best made coffee is grown on volcanic soil.
In Leagspi City, Daraga area, there is an old church located on top of a hill and a panoramic view of the Mayon volcano. Also, there is the ruins of Kagsawa, sunken church which caused by the eruption of the Volcano. Another tourist spot near the area is the Hot Springs of Tiwi
The active Mayon Volcano is one of the Seven Wonders because of its Perfect Cone Shape. Many local people and foreigners with cameras visit the place. They want to see the finest beauty of the Volcano.
