Since the founding of the archbishopric of Munich and Freising in 1821, the Cathedral Church of Our Lady, locally known as Frauenkirche, has been the church of the South Bavarian clerical provinces.

The effect of this brick-built Late Gothic church is because of its enormous size, its towering walls, its obvious expressing and its shortage of decorations. With its powerful twin towers, rising to an elevation of 325 and 328 ft, it is the most famous landmark of Munich.

The Cathedral Church of Our Lady was constructed in 1468-88 by Jörg Halspach on the location of an old chapel devoted to the Virgin. In 1525, instead of the spires initially intended, the twin towers were given distinctive Renaissance domes, its green sheen matches well with the dark red brick.

Inside the cathedral, the two-row 22 towering pillars were renovated in Renaissance fashion in 1601 but switched back to a Gothic design in 1858. After its reconstruction when it was destructed in the last war, it has a plainly envisioned but successful whitewash interior. The aisles as well as the side windows are unseen when you look at it from the porch.
