One of the most beautiful gorges in Slovenia, the Vintgar Gorge is situated, about 4 km northwest of the island of Bled. The river, which flows through this gorge, is called the Rodovna and it was only discovered as late as 1891.

Nature at its Best

This majestic gorge winds its way through 1.6 km of picturesque scenery that includes forest covers, rocks, waterfalls, exquisite rapids, and serene pools on either sides. At regular intervals you will find the presence of wooden bridges that have been suspended at various places across the gorge.

You can use them to walk across the gorge and feel the gush of the powerful flow of water below you. Needless to say the sights and sounds from such bridges will be breathtaking in all their glory. You will take around 40 minutes to walk about 1 km of the gorge and at the end of the gorge you will find some of the most magnificent waterfalls you would have ever seen. Once here, you will understand why Bled and its surroundings are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Slovenia.

The Three Phases of Your Walk

Once you reach the Vintgar Gorge, from Bled, you will be treated to a three phase walk. The first stage will take you through an area where the water is wild, and wherein waters gush over the rocky terrain to create small pools. The second stage, will take you across to the Zasip end, and through this stretch you will be forgiven for imagining that the force of the water has abetted. However, the big splash, that the water makes, will tell you the truth of the matter. The end stretch is much cooler and has a few waterfalls at the end of it all.

You must not forget to bring some picnic lunch from Bled, as the walk through the gorge will make you very hungry, and, moreover, you can make good use of the delightful picnic spots that dot the walk. Slovenia is a country that gives you an option of many walks through gorges, but the walk through Vintgar gorge is something special.

Facilities and Amenities

The rivers of Slovenia are well known for their fishes. A restaurant offering the freshest of catches from the Radovna, is situated inside the precincts of the gorge. Moreover, there are a host of snack bars that are scattered throughout the walk ways and provide some delicious local refreshments.

Rest rooms and benches also can be found throughout the walk. Care has been taken to make the walk through the Vintgar gorge, comfortable and enjoyable for the tourists.

How to Reach

You can take a bus from the bus station situated near Hotel Jaelovica, in Bled, till the village of Podham. Taxis are available from the Triglav Shopping center, or you could also take the circular walk and then travel through to the Vintgar gorge, taking the road that passes through several quaint villages.
