Unveiling Vietnam – What to See and Where to Go
Vietnam Today
Vietnam over the last three decades has transitioned from a French colony, to a war country and now into a popular tourist destination. Fascination is everywhere; from the Mekong Delta in the south to the northern limestone islands of Ha Long Bay, which is one of Vietnam’s several UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, you will see spots unmatched elsewhere in the world. With spectacular, pristine beaches along the coast and unique sites inland, you will find that hotel accommodation throughout Vietnam is a win-win situation wherever you go. As we take you on this journey, we will reveal why Vietnam is one of the most fantastic places to visit in SE Asia.
The Mekong Delta of Southern Vietnam
The Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam is a must see. The origin of this delta is from silt deposits of the Mekong River, which come from nearby countries like Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. The river then splits into tributaries, forming a series of canals and plains, hence the name ‘River of Nine Dragons’. The rich soil has given rise to the vast rice-paddy fields and thick, lush orchards filled with tropical fruits such as mango, coconut and longan. One sight you cannot miss about the delta is the floating markets and floating houses. Even though there is land transportation, the best way to explore Mekong Delta is by private boat.
The Vibrant Ho Chi Ming City
West of the Mekong Delta is the ever popular Ho Chi Ming City – the commercial centre and the largest city of Vietnam. Its significance lies in its marriage between the current and the ancient. On one hand, you can enjoy the nightlife, great cuisine, upscale restaurants and shopping areas. Dong Khoi Street, one of the liveliest parts of the city is one of such places to see this fusion in action. You can also view the ancient pagodas and buildings of colonial French architecture. Some key French colonial buildings to view are:
The Notre Dame Cathedral
Municipal Theater and
The General Post Office.
Some of the main pagodas in Ho Chi Ming City are:
· Xa Loi
· Vinh Nghiem
· Jade Emperor
Discover South Central Vietnam
When exploring South Central Vietnam, tourists frequently visit the coastal Fishing Villages like Mui Ne and some of the finest beaches in the country, such as the 12-mile Mui Ne and the beautiful Doc Let. The picturesque resort towns like Nha Trang and Phan Thiet are a sight to behold. This is the area of many indigenous minorities such as the Cham people. There you can view the magnificent Cham Towers. You will be impressed that the ancient Cham ruins are still well preserved. Moving inland, visit Dalat, the main resort town and French-styled hill station that is a popular honeymoon spot in the Central Highlands.
The Treasures of Central Vietnam
