Discover The Natural Beauty Of Launceston Tasmania

Situated in Tamar Valley, Launceston is the second largest and among the oldest cities in Australia. It is in the northern region of Tasmania and sits at the confluence of three rivers surrounded by several mountains and large hills. With a cool, temperate climate, Launceston is a favorite destination for tourists interested in visiting valley wineries or exploring this historic city and all it has to offer.

There are four distinct seasons in the valley with January and February being the warmest months of the year. Winters are cool, calm and often foggy. The coldest weather comes in July.

Launceston accommodation options can be easily found. The city is compact and easy to explore with a boardwalk that links the seaport area to the cultural district and the popular urban reserve named Cataract Gorge. The Gorge, as it is known by the locals, welcomes hikers via a pathway along the cliff that overlooks the South Esk River.

Take a leisurely ride across The Gorge on the chairlift that offers panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Stop at the First Basin for a meal at the cafe or stroll along the beach. The Cliff Grounds lie on the northern side which is typically shady and is home to many exotic plants and ferns. Along the way, observant visitors may even spot peacocks and wallabies that call this setting home.

Inveresk Precinct is the cultural center resting on the site where the old railway station and rail yards used to operate. Many of the former workshops have been converted to house artifacts and exhibitions. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is located in nearby Royal Park.

The Central Business District features many fine examples of 19th and early 20th century Victorian and Georgian architecture. The art deco designs are evident in the Lucks Corner and Holyman House. Henty House, the Police Station and the ANZ building are rare specimens displaying Brutalist architecture. The Launceston synagogue is done in Egyptian Revival style which is rarely seen.

Wine lovers will not want to miss the opportunity to tour the various cool climate vineyards located in Tamar Valley. The Wine Route heads north on both river banks and continues east to the Pipers River region. Visitors can have a meal and taste the fine Chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs and Sauvignon Blancs made here. Pick summer fruit to enjoy at the Hillwood Strawberry Farm and take in the sights at Seahorse World and Platypus World at Beauty Point.

In addition to dining in the many fine restaurants, visitors are invited to cruise the Tamar River and wetland area or stop by the Country Club Casino and try their luck or play a round of golf. City Park is next to the center of the city and is home to Albert Hall and a large exhibit of Japanese Macaque monkeys.

Plan your next holiday visit to Launceston and get to know the northern region of Tasmania better. Be sure to take time to partake of the fine foods and fine wines while exploring the beautiful surroundings.
