Amsterdam – A Perfect City Break Destination
Amsterdam, the largest and capital city of the Netherlands, is one of the most popular cities in Europe for short city breaks. Although the weather is traditionally best during the summer months, it is enjoyed by international tourists all year round. It’s main attractions for many tourists are most probably the city centre canals and the famous Van Gogh museum, yet it also offers many relatively undiscovered spots to see.
Besides its major, famous sights, Amsterdam is also home to many less well known attractions, that are waiting to be discovered. The city’s museums such as the Museum of Bags and Purses, which takes visitors through the history of fashion with a large collection of bags, and the Allard Pierson Museum with its selection of works of art are just two of the city’s cultural hidden gems.
Although it may not be the first destination that springs to mind for an adventure holiday, Amsterdam does have a lot to offer the adventure enthusiast. Skating is still extremely popular in the city, with the Friday Night Skate taking place almost every Friday evening, as are indoor carting, indoor climbing and race-car driving. Any water sports fans can also rent canoes and boats.
Moving away from the city centre itself, the Oud-West district of Amsterdam is definitely worth mentioning. The residential areas here, with their elegant mansions and stylish architecture, offer a relaxing alternative to the bustling city centre. It’s terraces lined with small cosy restaurants and cafes are also a great place to enjoy the summer sunshine. Another district with great charm is the quieter Amsterdam North (Amsterdam Noord). A quick free ferry trip across the river IJ will take you to this cutting-edge area of the city which often hosts exhibitions and festivals and is said to be the creative area of the city. To satisfy your appetite, there is the Pancake Boat (Pannenkoekenboot), which offers delicious Dutch-style pancakes on the Amsterdam harbours and is extremely popular amongst tourists.
Amsterdam’s booming hotel market is the foundation of its tourism industry. A wide and varied range of accommodation means you are sure to find something to suit you, whether it be comfortable low-cost hostels or five-star luxury hotels. Or why don’t you forget the conventional Amsterdam hotel and opt for alternative accommodation in one of the city’s beautiful waterboats? These “hotels on water” are fully furnished and are often accompanied by a small floating terrace area with table and chairs.
