Gladstone – Be Surprised

Queensland’s coast is sprinkled with some of Australia’s most attractive towns, stunning sights and exciting experiences. The coast of Central Queensland is no exception to this, with this region’s towns offering the perfect gateway to treasures such as The Great Barrier Reef.

Located 550 KM north of Brisbane you will find the unique and intriguing city of Gladstone. Situated between the Calliope River and the Boyne River, the atmosphere here is largely marine-focused. Its position on a deep water harbour also adds to this marine atmosphere and establishes Gladstone firmly as a must-see coastal tourist destination.

The Gladstone region encompasses the Southern Great Barrier Reef of the Discovery Coast and the Hinterland of the Banana and Burgeong areas. This contrast between coastal and hinterland settings provides for a holiday location that is ideal for all tastes.

Gladstone is sometimes referred to as the “Port City of the World” and this mainly owes to the hub of marine activity, evident through the many waterfront and foreshore recreation areas that dot the city.

Among the best of these is Spinnaker Park. This popular recreation area is home to 2.5 KM of educational walking tracks that will take you along the exquisite ocean wall and through some intriguing native wetlands.

Just up the road you will find the Gladstone Marina, which is where you will find the area’s hub of activity. Enjoy a BBQ or picnic on the waterfront and spare some time for the many dolphins that frequent these waters throughout the day.

The Marina is also home to the launching station for Herron Island, so if you have an extra day on your hands this is definitely worth a look.

Keeping with the theme of marine and coastal life, visitors will quickly find that Gladstone acts as a terrific base to explore Queensland’s Discovery Coast. Spanning a total distance of 60 KM, this stunning stretch of coast boasts rural hinterland, secluded beaches, untouched National Parks and access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Other interesting marine hot spots around Gladstone include the fascinating areas of Boyne Island and Tannum Sands. These seaside communities offer a relaxed coastal lifestyle, with a large focus on outdoors and maritime pursuits. Areas around here are particularly ideal for water skiing and fishing.

Keeping with the theme of nature, you should also take some time to explore the many national parks that surround the area. Several of these include the Broadwater Conservation Park, Cania Gorge, Deepwater National Park, Capricorn Cays National Park and Curtis Island. Each of these offers something unique and interesting, guaranteeing you will leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Another great way to get in touch with nature is through an exploration of to Tondoon Botanic Gardens. This completely native garden is one of only a few in Australia, maintaining a scientific collection for the Port Curtis region and North Queensland. Nestled on 83 hectares, this beautiful garden boasts a lake with forest surrounds and the Mt Biondello bush walk. Home to an abundance of striking flora and fauna, this garden is a must.
