Spend a Day Exploring Monaco During a Break on the Cote D’Azur

If you are looking for the perfect place to enjoy a day out on the Cote d’Azur, Monaco has plenty to offer.

This tiny principality only covers 1.95 sq km – the world’s second-smallest country, after the Vatican – but what it lacks in size, it makes up in fascinating history and culture.

In fact, Monaco comes complete with its own red and white flag, telephone area code, royal family and even a national language – the traditional Monegasque dialect, which is still taught to schoolchildren here. French, however, is the country’s official language.

While Monaco is not part of the European Union, it benefits from close geographical, political and cultural ties to France – and the local currency is the euro.

A good way to get acquainted with Monaco during your visit is to spend some time exploring its incredible historic sites.

The Palais du Prince – or the Prince’s Palace, in English – is a brilliant place to start. The palace is open to the public for tours from April 1st until October 31st each year and you’ll find it is a fascinating place to explore.

During your tour, you’ll be able to take in the palace’s 15th-century frescoes and learn about the original building that occupied the palace site – a Genoese fort dating back to 1215.

The palace charges an admission fee, but you may find you are able to save money by combining your ticket with admission to another Monaco attraction, such as the Oceanographic Museum, which is popular with visitors of all ages.

For a further taste of the local history, you may wish to make Monaco Cathedral your next stop. This structure dates back to 1875 and is the final resting place of many prominent members of Monaco’s royal family, including Princess Grace and Prince Rainier.

Of course, Monaco is famous for more than palaces and cathedrals and you won’t want to leave before checking out the spectacular Le Grand Casino de Monte Carlo.

Here, you’ll be able to play in one of 21 designated game rooms – or simply watch the excitement from a distance. The casino dates back to 1858 and today is one of the principality’s most famous tourist attractions.

Whether you choose to spend time in Monaco for its sunny coastal climate, its historic buildings or its vibrant casino, you are sure to have a brilliant time on your day out in the Cote d’Azur.
