Bratislava, Slovakia – 5 Must See Attractions When Visiting Slovakia’s Capital City Bratislava

Next to other European capital cities, Bratislava Slovakia may at first sight appear a little unimpressive, perhaps even a bit ugly.  However, when you dig a little deeper, you will discover an old town that is simply rich in culture.

When visiting Bratislava, there are five tourist attractions that you should definitely make a point of visiting:

Bratislava Castle

Sometimes likened to an upside-down table, Bratislava Castle has an unmistakable design. The castle contains exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum and there is a very good exposition on the History of Musical Instruments.

Primatial Palace

The beautiful Primatial Palace was where Napoleon signed the Pressburg Peace Treaty, in 1805.  Today, it houses a section of the Municipal Museum and has a collection of English Tapestries, which were actually found hidden inside the walls of the palace.

St. Martin’s Cathedral

St. Martin’s Cathedral is the oldest and finest church in Bratislava and was built in the 14th and 15th centuries, in a gothic style. During the period when Bratislava was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, a number of kings and queens were crowned here, including Marie Theresa.

St. Michael’s Tower

St. Michael’s Tower is the only one of the original Watch Tower Gates that still stands, acting as a gateway into the old town from the North.  Today, it houses an interesting exposition about Arms and Municipal Fortifications, over 6 floors of the tower. Those that venture up to the top of the tower are rewarded with an outstanding view of Bratislava, together with an excellent photo opportunity of the castle.

Novy Most

The unusual design of the “New Bridge” may or may not be to everyone’s taste, but there is no denying that it is a symbol of Bratislava. Take a lift to the top of the bridge, which is now the UFO cafe, and see spectacular views of the city.

With elegant buildings, churches, cathedrals and fine restaurants that rival any in Europe, Bratislava’s old town is well worth a visit.  Today, Bratislava has a real buzz about it – a cosmopolitan city with an exciting ambiance awaits!
