Central Slovakia – 5 Must See Places in the Heart of Slovakia

Slovakia is so much more than Bratislava and the High Tatras, which is the usual Slovak destination for tourists coming from abroad.  There is actually so much to do and see throughout the country, and no more so than in Central Slovakia.

In particular, there are 5 places that you should definitely make a point of visiting, if you are traveling in the area:

1). Banska Bystrica

Banska Bystrica has one of the most beautiful town squares in all of Slovakia and is a city simply brimming with culture.  There are many churches, museums and art galleries to be found and a highlight of any visit is the excellent SNP Museum, which is dedicated to presenting the events of World War II from Slovakia’s perspective.

After a busy day’s sightseeing, be sure to sit out on one of the main square’s many cafe terraces and relax with a fine meal and local wine.

2). Donovaly

The ski resort of Donovaly is open all year round and in the Spring and Summer months makes a perfect place for walking or just taking in the breathtaking scenery. The resort’s Fun Arena has a number of great adrenalin attractions to enjoy, including bungee trampolining, a rope centre, a climbing wall and toboggan run.

3). Dolny Kubin

Dolny Kubin is without doubt one of the most attractive towns in all of Slovakia.  Situated in a valley and with wonderful views of the mountains from all around the town, it boasts two ski centres, an art gallery, a museum, an aviary and an unusual wooden bridge, which spans the Orava river.

4). Kremnica

Famous for its Mint, which has been producing coins since the fourteenth century, Kremnica is a delightful town in the heart of Slovakia.  There are some very interesting museums, which showcase the town’s rich past, as well as a plague column and Kremnica castle.

Make sure that you take the time to visit a little village a few miles north of Kremnica, called Kremnicke Bane.  This is the geographic center of Europe and a little plaque close to a monastery marks the actual spot.

5). Bojnice

If you can only make it to one place in Central Slovakia, then make sure it is Bojnice.  With its spa, zoo, falconry, fairy-tale castle and the country’s oldest tree, this little town is simply packed with tourist attractions.  The boulevard leading up to the castle has a number of fine restaurants, serving excellent food at very reasonable prices, so no need to take a packed lunch.
