Isle of Man Holidays – Things to See and Do

The Isle of Man is a small island located in the centre of the British Isles. Because of its proximity to Great Britain, it is a favorite vacation spot of the British. It is a good holiday destination for tourists from all over the world, too, though, particularly since it offers interesting attractions and activities. Indeed, there are many things you can see and do during your Isle of Man holidays.

The Laxey Wheel

Measuring over 72 feet in diameter, the Laxey Wheel is the largest operational waterwheel in the world, as well as the most popular of the Isle of Man attractions. While in the village of Laxey, you can also take a tour of the mines or visit the woolen mill where you can buy some local crafts.

Steam Trains

Have you ever wished you could ride a steam train? If so, you’ll be happy to know that the Isle of Man has two operational steam railways, although the Great Laxey Mine Railway is open only on Saturdays and bank holidays. Indeed, you can definitely experience riding a steam locomotive during your Isle of Man holidays, complete with the smoke and the sound of the whistle.

Motorsport

The TT Races, the most famous road race in the world, are held every year on the Isle of Man, making it a great destination for motorsport lovers and thrill seekers alike. There are several other races you can catch, too, as well as bike and car rallies.

Birdwatching

The Isle of Man is a birdwatcher’s paradise so make sure you bring your binoculars when you spend your Isle of Man holidays. This way, you can observe the peregrines, ravens and terns which stop by to rest or nest on the island, as well as black guillemots and sandpipers.

Scuba Diving

There are many diving clubs on the Isle of Man, which gives tourists the chance to see the spectacular underwater wildlife around the island. There are many shipwrecks to explore, too, although some are privately owned by local clubs or protected by the government.

Golf

Although small, the Isle of Man offers nine beautiful golf courses, some of which are finely manicured while others are all-natural. The golf courses are relatively cheap and rarely crowded, too – perfect for a great game of golf for your entire family during your Isle of Man holidays.

Museums

There are also many interesting museums you can visit during your Isle of Man holidays, such as the Manx Museum, the Manx Aviation and Military Museum and the Grove Museum. This way, you can get a taste of the local history and culture, and truly make the most out of your vacation.
