Things to See When You Travel to Washington
There are so many exciting things to see in the nation’s capital, it can be difficult to narrow down the list. Here are a few things to include in your itinerary to make the most of your trip.
· Smithsonian: This institute is filled with over 19 galleries, museums, artefacts and historical memorabilia. You can’t see everything in just one day, so you’ll have to pick your favourites and tour what you want to see. If you’re not sure what’s best, ask for help from one of the tour guides.
· Rock Creek Park: This is more of a hidden gem that many people miss out on seeing. If you love nature, take in the sights and tour the planetarium which is operated by the National Park Service.
· United States Holocaust Museum: A sobering historical exhibit, this is an educational and popular sight.
· Trolley Ride: Take the old trolley and see over 100 points of interest along the way. One ticket is good for the whole day, and you’ll have on and off privileges.
· Georgetown: This is one of the most historic areas of the city, with cobbled streets, interesting architecture and lots of cafes and restaurants.
· Lincoln Memorial: If there is only one memorial you have time to see, make sure it’s the Lincoln Memorial. Modelled after a Greek temple, you can see the Gettysburg Address inscribed on one of the memorial walls, as well as his second inaugural speech. You will also see a painting that shows the angel of truth freeing a slave.
· DuPont Circle: This is one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Washington and attracts many tourists. Stroll down the mature, tree-lined streets; stop in at a café or browse the art collections. An interesting neighbourhood that combines art, residential and cafes all in one.
· Cherry Bloom Festival: If you’re in the city in the first part of spring, you’ll definitely want to check out the Cherry Bloom Festival with its many events, celebrations and of course cherry blooms.
Washington combines old world charm and modern amenities. There are activities and sights that will amaze even the most discerning of visitors. Talk to your travel agent and ask if any of these attractions can be put into a package. Do some research to find coupons or discounts that may be available.
