Visit Beautiful Lynton and Lynmouth

The picturesque villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are both located on the northern edge of Exmoor in the wonderful county of Devon. Lynton is situated on top of a gorge with Lynmouth below; both are connected via the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. Both villages are quaint and hold their own separate appeals to the many numbers of people that visit every year.

Lynmouth being a coastal village has many facilities and amenities available to it including a small harbour with several local shops. The two villages are now both governed at local level by the Lynton and Lynmouth town council. During the Victorian times the area was nicknamed Little Switzerland because of its cliff railway and its quaint style of housing.

One of Lynton and Lynmouths main attractions is the Valley of the Rocks. The valley is located on the outskirts of the area and is a popular tourist attraction, most famous for its geology and herds of feral goats. It is of no surprise that many novels have been inspired and set in this tranquil and scenic area of Exmoor including Lorna Doone written in 1869 by Richard Doddridge Blackmore. Thomas Gainsborough the English portrait and landscape painter honeymooned in Lynmouth and was quoted as saying ‘the area was the most delightful place for a landscape painter this country can boast’.

One astonishing story tells the courageous story of the Lynmouth Lifeboat crew and how they transported their Lifeboat over 13 miles of hills and rough ground with just the use of horse and carts to save a stricken boat. The rescue effort that happened back in 1899 took over 100 men and 20 horses and helped save the eighteen crew members aboard the boat. A museum depicting the rescue is located pride of place on Lynmouths harbour and hosts information and pictures regarding the event.

Lynton and Lynmouth has all of the features and qualities to make your holiday very special and memorable.
