Welcome To Kangaroo Island, South Australia

One of the most wonderful things about Australia is its incredible and unique wildlife. Australia is home to animals not found anywhere else in the world such as echidnas, kangaroo, koala and wallabies. If you are visiting Australia and want to have the best experience of wildlife you can, then Kangaroo Island is the best place to go. Kangaroo Island, as the name suggests, is an island, and is located off the coast of South Australia. The island is popularly known as the zoo without fences, and along with the wildlife there is much more to see and do.

When you visit you will be able to see not only the above mentioned echidnas, kangaroo, koala and wallabies but also emu, Australian sea lions, penguins, and a huge array of bird life including pink pelicans. You can walk amongst the wallabies, and see koala sleeping in trees, and penguins going about their daily lives. The island has plenty of easily accessible spaces and plenty of scenic spots to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The entire island is only 155 kilometres square so it’s possible to see much of it in a single visit, however it’s recommended to allow yourself plenty of time to explore. On your travels you should include a visit to Emu Bay Lavender where there are some 9,000 lavender plants growing which are used to create the items that are sold in the store including cosmetics, crafts and culinary items from the cafe including shortbread and ice cream.

One of the benefits of the island location is the large expanse of coastline which offers visitors an arrange of different beaches and bays to visit including Emu Bay with its 4 kilometres of beach. You can swim, take out a boat, or enjoy a barbecue in the picnic area. Stokes Beach also offers a barbecue and picnic area and a rock pool if you prefer not to swim in the surf. If you are looking for a location to take some stunning photos then head to Red Banks – where you’ll discover incredible layered cliffs of colour.

Kangaroo Island is also home to it’s own festival where you can enjoy the food and wine produced on the island in a fun and festive experience. There are workshops by celebrity chefs and if you are keen to learn more about how the food and wine is produced then you should sign up for the ‘Table Surfing’ event.
