Apollo Bay, Delightful Destination
Apollo Baylies on Victoria’s iconic Great Ocean Road and is less than three hours by car from Melbourne. Featuring stunning coastal scenery and nestled into rolling green hills, Apollo Bay is a treasure trove of things to see and do and features a wide range of accommodation options.
The Great Ocean Road stretches for 300km along the coast and is dotted with villages like Apollo Bay, which welcome the influx of visitors over the summer months and offer a range of experiences to enjoy, as well as glorious views around every bend of the road.
Featuring a variety of swimming and surf beaches, as well as a boat harbour, and with the marina home to a large fishing fleet, there is no shortage of attractions. Many visitors like to relax on the beaches, while others try their hand at fishing or golf and there is a range of shops, restaurants and markets to enjoy, along with horse riding and hang-gliding and pet-friendly beaches for your ‘fur kids’.
Apollo Bay is the perfect base from which to explore the Great Ocean Road and all it has to offer, with accommodation ranging from B&Bs, apartments and holiday houses to caravan parks. It is a popular summer destination but the wild beauty of the region defies the seasons, making the Great Ocean Road a great holiday destination year-round.
Marriners Lookout boasts a panoramic view of the town, the harbour and the long stretch of beaches. Just a short distance away is the Great Otway National Park, with its rugged slopes and remnant rainforest, as well as the lighthouse at Cape Otway. The Otway Fly is an amazing walk among the treetops of the rainforest and offers a wonderful way to see the ancient landscape.
If shopping and eating out is your thing, then Apollo Bay has you covered. There is a great range of eateries, many featuring the locally caught seafood and a number of cosy tea houses dot the Otway Ranges. Enjoy browsing the local shops and hunt for treasure at the markets on the foreshore each Saturday, or if you are looking for serious retail therapy, Geelong and Lorne are nearby.
The Great Ocean Walk stretches for 91kms from Apollo Bay and ends near the Twelve Apostles and much of the route boasts wonderful views of the coastline. Another day trip well worth making is the short drive to spectacular Marriners Falls, along the Barham River Road.
