There’s More to Miami Than Beaches

Miami is famous the world over for the quality of its beaches, but once you’ve had your fill of sunbathing and water sports you can still find much to see and do in the Florida city.

Miami not only boasts stunning natural scenery, but the Art Deco architecture of areas such as Miami Beach also makes it a popular destination for photographers. Those looking for alternative tourist attractions in Miami should also consider paying a trip to the American Police Hall of Fame, which counts a real electric chair among its exhibits.

The city has much to offer those looking to bag mementos of their holiday too, from the boutiques of Bal Harbour Shopping Centre, just north of Miami Beach, to the sprawling markets of Bayside Marketplace, where visitors will also have the chance to sample the unique culinary fusion of Miami’s mixed cultural heritage at local restaurants.

If you’re looking to get away from the sun-kissed coastline during your visit to Miami, taking a trip to the Everglades National Park could be just the thing to cure beach-overload. Located on Florida’s southern tip, the national park comprises more than 1.5 million acres of highly varied landscape, from swamps to prairies and even sub-tropical jungles, so there’s no shortage of activities.

Whether you’re just planning to take a walk and enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the Everglades or you’ve got your sights set on camping or canoeing activities, the Everglades is well suited both for relaxation and exertion. Visitors will also have the chance to see some of America’s most endangered species from a safe vantage point, such as the West Indian manatee, the American crocodile and the Florida panther.

Visiting the Everglades doesn’t have to mean leaving civilisation behind, however, with popular tourist centres such as Shark Valley Visitor Centre being the perfect way to see indigenous species in comfort, without dealing with the bugs and oppressive heat. You can even take your trip to the Everglades further with a detour to Everglades City, where the restaurant menus offer much for the experimental diner – though perhaps not for the faint-hearted.
