Top Mountain Biking Destinations
Mountain biking can be one of the most fun and exciting activities you can do outdoors. Not only is it great exercise, but mountain biking can be an incredible and memorable adrenaline rush. There are many scenic hiking and trekking trails all over the world, but not many of them will allow mountain bikes to share a trail with people on foot, as it can be dangerous to both parties. So where can mountain bikers find great trails? Read on to for some of the best trails that are exclusively set aside for people on bikes:
Utah
The great state of Utah in the United States is well known for outdoor activities, and its also one of the best places in the world to enjoy mountain biking. Try the Moab area for specially marked paths and trails for bikers. The area has an abundance of scenery you will roll through, including the famous red rocks, massive rock outcroppings and formations, hills, valleys and sandy areas. Great trails include Amasa Back, Sovereign, the Intrepid Trail and Klondike Bluffs. Utah is home to what is considered to be the most popular mountain biking trail in the world, the Slickrock trail. Moab offers a wide range of trails for many difficulties and experience levels. Another top trail in Utah is near St. George, the Gooseberry Mesa.
Colorado
Next to Utah, try Colorado, specifically Western Colorado. Colorado is one of the world’s top destinations for skiing, and that also makes it a great place for mountain biking. Loads of elevation changes and mountain trails make Colorado a great option. Colorado is home to some of the most difficult and windy trails in the world as well. Literally hundreds of miles of trails are available in this gorgeous area. Trails with steep climbs and descents can also be found. If you’re near Denver, try the intermediate Colorado Trail.
North Carolina
Specifically, the area around Asheville, located between two great mountain ranges, offers some of the best trails in the United States. The Pisgah Mountains offer a spectacular single track trail which winds through meadows, waterfalls and forests. There’s a reason why this area is considered the Moab of the East Coast. In Bryson City, try the intermediate trails of the Tsali Recreation Area. Also in North Carolina, some top trails are located near Charlotte, Troutman and Wilkesboro.
Europe & Asia
Outside the United States, there are also many options. In Europe, try the trails that run through the Alpine Mountains in Austria. Trails here offer a wide range of landscapes and terrains including easier, flatter, grassy lands, as well as trails with very steep climbs. The Alpines are perfect for lake and mountain views.
On the other side of the world, try Vietnam for a different riding experience. Travel through valleys with rice paddies, visit small villages and enjoy a completely different culture.
