The United States of America is an amalgamation of different cultures, traditions and different climates. This diversity in the cultures and traditions of the place means that different festivals are celebrated in different ways, with people observing different local rituals in different parts of the country. Such is the diversity of the place that it is difficult to describe the whole lot of it. However, when it comes to Christmas, there are certain things which are common to every household in America.

  • The Bethlehem star and the Christmas tree: During the Christmas season, you will spot the Christmas tree with the Bethlehem star on top in every shop and household of America. Sometimes, the Bethlehem star is replaced with an angel, which signifies the announcement for Christ’s birth. The tree is decorated with all sorts of things, from different colored balls to boxes of presents etc. Many people in America even decorate their Christmas tree with ornaments, usually old ones which belong to their ancestors. The Christmas tree is often the pride of people in America and there is an unsaid competition among houses in a locality over which Christmas tree would be the best.
  • Snowmen and more: Apart from the Christmas tree, there are plenty of lights and different kinds of figures associated with Christmas such as the snowman, reindeer and a whole lot of other stuff. Some households and shops even place a crèche with figures of baby Jesus with Holy Mary and different figurines of animals.
  • Food: Like every other festival around the world, Christmas is a time to savor delicacies across America. It is a time to be with family and friends and enjoy a hearty meal with beverages. People in different parts of America have their own customs when it comes to food on Christmas. However, the usual fare includes Turkey, salad, baked potatoes, cranberry juice and some sauteed vegetables. Of course, as you travel through different parts of America, you will find variations in that staple fare.
  • Giving: Christmas is also a time for people in America to remember Jesus and help out the needy. Special church services are held on Christmas Eve as well as the day of Christmas. The well off families can generally be seen donating their old clothes or some food items to the needy. The Church also holds special choir concerts and a lot more to commemorate the birth of Jesus.
